The Case Study: The bespoke book cases is a great introduction to the capacity of photogrammetry. In an era of rapid technological advancements, photogrammetry has emerged as a powerful and flexible tool for preservation and documentation of cultural heritage, natural landscapes, and under water environments.

As a leading company focused in terrestrial and underwater photogrammetry, we pride ourselves on providing state of the art solutions for accurate, repeatable digital preservation, as well as down stream analysis and interpretation. Our partnership with 3D Flow, along with our other software providers and tailored Python scripts producers, ensure data integrity and facilitate easy automation.

In this article, we highlight a recent project for Accupixel that demonstrates the potential of photogrammetry to create detailed, scaled replicas of historic façade statues, allowing their incorporation into a bespoke book case.

The Challenge

A client came to Jose to create a one of a kind book case that would include scaled replicas of the original façade statues adorning a historic building. The goal was not only to produce an aesthetically pleasing piece of furniture but also to accurately preserve and increase accessibility for these important cultural artifacts.

Our team faced the challenge of capturing precise measurements and complex details of the statues to ensure faithful replication.

The Solution

As a result, our Technical Director, Jose, employed cutting edge terrestrial photogrammetry techniques to scan the façade statues. He used a combination of high-resolution images, data, and photogrammetry software. This allowed him to generate a highly accurate 3D model of each statue. This digital preservation method captured the fine details and dimensions of the original artifacts. Consequently, it became possible to create accurate scaled replicas.

Photogrammetry is a technique used to obtain accurate and detailed measurements of physical objects and environments. Through the analysis and processing photographic images, we can create 3D models. This non-contact, non-destructive method enables the generation of 3D models or maps based on the captured images. Applications for photogrammetry span various fields, including surveying, topography, architecture, archaeology, and cultural heritage preservation.

The methodology of the Case Study: The bespoke book cases

Once the 3D models were created for the Case Study: The bespoke book cases, they were converted into CNC (Computer Numerical Control) code. Additionally, this process allowed us to drive a 5-axis milling machine, using state of the art equipment. The result was the precise carving of statues from high quality Spanish walnut. A faithful replication of the original artefacts’ intricate details at a scaled representation.

Spanish walnut – known as “Juglans Regia” – is an extraordinary value timber. The timber is of slow growth and well known for its gorgeous waving grain and rich shades. This is a scarce wood that guarantees a unique piece of furniture.

CNC (Computer Numerical Control) milling is an advanced manufacturing process. It uses computerized controls and machine tools to remove material from a work piece. This method creates custom designed parts or objects. The process involves multi axis machines, such as 3-, 4-, and 5-axis mills. These machines offer a high degree of precision and versatility in manufacturing.
